Spot Vs. Contract: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to purchasing hops, you have options.    Contracting hops for future brewing needs is a great way to ensure you always have the hops you need, when you need them, at a fixed price, allowing for improved budget forecasting.    Purchasing hops on the spot market as needed is a low-commitment option for those who need greater flexibility, though prices are subject to fluctuation.     Many breweries opt for a combination of the two, using long-term contracts to stabilize necessities, while shopping the spot market for one-off brands, and taking advantage of market promotions.

Hands-On Hop Selection

Hop Selection gives breweries the opportunity to personally select the specific lots of hops for their contract volume, fine-tuning the characteristics and attributes that best fit their recipes and beer styles. Coordinated by appointment, Selection traditionally occurs during the harvest season at Yakima Chief Hops headquarters in Yakima, Washington.   Using a data-driven process, we carefully curate samples that reflect each brewery’s trends and preferences, presenting lots of hops that fit their needs and brand.   In 2023, we expanded our Selection experience to welcome breweries with lower contract volumes, who would otherwise not meet the thresholds to qualify for the traditional Selection experience. Through Project Open Door (POD), we are proud to make hop Selection more accessible.  Hop Selection is both a rite of passage and a sacred journey, connecting brewers more deeply to their hops and the people who grow them.
