B.T. Loftus Ranches

Loftus Ranches can trace its roots to the early 1920s, when the Loftus family first arrived in Moxee, Washington. They came in search of railroad work but instead began raising livestock and a variety of crops, building a lasting agricultural legacy. As the Yakima Valley took hold as a premier hop-growing region, B.T. and Leota Loftus established the family’s first hop farm in 1932. Those first few hectares laid the foundation for one of Yakima Valley’s longest continuously operating hop farms. Today, Loftus Ranches is owned and operated by third-generation hop farmers Mike and Cheryl Smith, and their son, Patrick.  

In 2015, the family expanded operations into the Lower Yakima Valley with the establishment of Tributary Hop Farms, located just across the Yakima River from Granger. Growing a diverse portfolio of hop varieties, including HBC experimental hops, the farm stays closely aligned with the evolving needs of brewers as one of the largest suppliers to the craft beer industry. 

Sustainability and environmental responsibility are central to the Loftus approach. The farm operates one of Washington State’s largest private solar energy installations, self-supplying more than 80 percent of its electricity needs. Loftus Ranches also maintains rigorous Global G.A.P., Green Chief®, and Salmon Safe certifications, reflecting a strong commitment to responsible farming practices. Known for building genuine relationships with brewers, the Loftus family shares a passion for innovation and quality and remains focused on growing hops that support creative brewing for generations to come.
