Carpenter Ranches

Carpenter Ranches traces its roots back to 1868, when Charles Carpenter left his hop-growing family in New York and journeyed west to the Ahtanum area of Washington’s Yakima Valley. Starting with little more than a log cabin and an ox cart, Charles established the first hop farm east of the Cascade Mountains, helping pioneer what would become the largest hop-producing region in the world. Through ingenuity and determination, he transformed raw wilderness into productive farmland, designing his own irrigation system, hop press, and wood-fuelled kiln to support the young operation. 

Six generations later, the Carpenter family continues to honour Charles’ innovative spirit while advancing the farm with a modern, sustainability-focused mindset. Guided by a ‘built, not bought’ philosophy, Carpenter Ranches values resourcefulness and self-reliance, using their own tools, skills, and infrastructure whenever possible to operate and expand. This balance of tradition and creativity has kept the family deeply connected to both the land and the evolving needs of the hop industry for more than 150 years. 

As a founding owner in the Yakima Chief family, Carpenter Ranches plays an active role in shaping the future of hops, growing over 21 varieties. They take pride in their legacy and are excited to watch the next generation grow into their roles on the farm and in this industry.
